“Adams Family” – one husband, two sons and three dogs – is all bark and no bite.

On another spooky note, Jeanne used to work in the funeral and cemetery business, and knows a thing or two about getting rid of the body….bwhahahah!  (She even teaches classes about it to other writers!)

Bring on the Heat (The Boys of Summer) by Katie Rose

This all-American story delivers heat with a lot of sizzle! Working for crazy Socialite Lydia Logan has its perks. When Lydia decides to head out of town once again to party she fears her grandfather will cut her off if he finds out she’s not out there trying to work hard and help contribute to the family fortune.  Once again she shirking her responsibilities to her community to schmooze and contribute to another wonderful charity – a black tie cocktail event with a fashion show. She offers her house sitter Darcy Hamilton the chance to attend the charity event with her invite since the Sonics Baseball team will be there. This charity event is a dream come true for Darcy, she’s been a fan of the Sonics since she was a little girl. It’s when she meets Chase Westbrook, pitcher for her beloved Sonics that her troubles begin.

What started out as a simple invite to attend a gala with Lydia’s blessing turns into an unintentional web of deceit and lies.  After all when Darcy left to go to Dubai to visit a prince she told Darcy she could take her appointment at the hairdresser and borrow an outfit for a fundraiser. This story is enchanting and like any good Cinderella story starts out with our beloved heroine needing a dress, complete makeover including shoes in order to attend the royal ball.  The Sonics of New Jersey are Major League Baseball royalty to Darcy. It’s at this Gala where Darcy meets the man of her dreams or in this case the sports icon she worships. Finally noticed by every man who walks by her because of the make-up, hair extensions and designer clothes, Darcy is enjoying the sudden attention.  Sounds great to me! What’s even better is that Darcy, unlike Lydia is book smart and truly devoted to Baseball. Those differences have some people wondering just who Lydia Logan really is.  Is she a closet intellectual genius or what the paparazzi report; a man-eater and party girl?

When the fundraiser ends and Darcy wakes up barely dressed in Chase’s apartment the morning after in a foggy, hung-over state, she panics and bolts.  Unfortunately she forgets something at Chase’s apartment and thus begins the charade of Darcy being Lydia Logan. Now the race is on to get them back so she can end the charade of Darcy being Logan and stop the game of unintentional lies.  It’s nice to see Darcy have remorse and want to tell Chase the truth as I the reader keep  screaming “stop interrupting her and listen to her.”  However, Chase can’t hear her and clearly doesn’t want to hear what he sees as inconsistencies. First and most obvious her interest and knowledge of Baseball and the compassion she has when a tragedy strikes his family. If only he knew how Darcy really felt he’d realize that his sixth sense was correct. They both need to come to terms with who they really are and what it is they are looking for.

This book is an enjoyable and easy read. It combines my love of baseball and a hot summer romance. It’s nice to see two characters realize how much they need each other. To Darcy’s credit she does try to confess her secret on each date to Chase but he never lets her get the words out.  The truth seems to be more difficult to admit as she grows more accustomed to Lydia’s lifestyle than her own.  This story from the first pitch to the last is fantastic.  Head out to the ballpark for a SONICs game to watch a hot pitcher play a great game of baseball.

AUTHOR BIO:

AMANDA (ah-MAHN-dah)- Latin- Meaning lovable or worthy of love. Fitting. I’ve always had an affinity for love. Being born in sunny San Diego in the mid 80’s to a young military couple gave me plenty of insight into the dynamics of a romantic relationship. Somewhere between moving coasts every three years, I found myself engrossed in fairytale romances and dressing up like a bride. My first real love was writing. By my sophomore year in a new high school in Virginia, I had a slew of short stories, songs, poems, and articles to my name. Writing was fun. It was a way to get the emotions, dialogue, and pictures out of my head, and create a destiny for my characters. I had no intention of making a career in writing, because it wasn’t what I did, it was who I was. In reality, I wanted to be an actress. Ah, to be the face of someone else’s authored story. The plan was to move in with my aunt in L.A. after graduation, but had a change of heart. Instead, I stayed with my high school sweetheart (now husband) and attended a film school in Norfolk, VA. It was at this school that I discovered my love for writing screenplays and felt compelled to follow that path. But…as the practical girl I was brought up to be, I decided to go to a real university. While working full time, I completed my BA in Psychology in four and a half years. Becoming a couple’s therapist had always been my “backup” career and there I was on my way to solving love’s most complicated quandaries one couple at a time. With all my new free time after graduation, I decided to turn my full-length screenplay into a novel in hopes it would help my screenplay sell. I think I was in the middle of writing chapter two when I realized that everything I had ever written was to prepare me for that moment when I knew I was a novelist. Talk about the affirmation of my life. Now my plan is to solve love’s most complicated quandaries one novel at a time.

Interview With Marissa Clarke:

1. Castles or Beaches?

Beaches! All four of my published novels feature beaches, including Sleeping with the Boss.

2. Hard Rock or Classical Music?

Both. I usually listen to indie. My favorite editing music (I don’t listen to music while actually writing) is moody, angsty stuff like Damien Rice,
Fisher, and The Muse. I’m also a fan of 30 Seconds to Mars.

3.  One thing that readers would be surprised to know about you?

I have “pet” Madagascar Cockroaches. Not on purpose. They are the result of a surprise incident in a middle school science classroom. Long story
short, my son was responsible for a male getting in the female terrarium, and the teacher said since he was responsible, the burden of care for the
resulting babies was mine. Being a softy, I took them in. …and still have them, many years and roachy generations later.

4. When you are traveling do you prefer to road trip it or fly it?

It really depends on the destination, but I generally prefer a road trip if someone else drives so I can read or stare out the window. If I have to drive,
I prefer to fly and get there fast.

5. If you had an all expenses paid trip anywhere in the world for research, where would you go?

Paris or Moscow. *sigh* In reality, my next research destination is The Great Dismal Swamp on the Virginia, North Carolina borders. I’m working
on a young adult novel set there.

Thanks for the fun questions and for being a part of the Boss Tour!

What Color is your Tartan?

Outlander by Diana Gabaldon, a book beloved by fans around the globe will make its TV debut tonight on STARZ.  Do you think it will do the books justice and include all the important details? Or, will it be even better than the book because they can take creative license to improve it and go beyond the written page. Knowing that Diana Gabaldon is a consultant for the series and on set as they film assures readers that it should maintain the integrity of the book and hopefully please them.

While many fans have been reading her books since the first one was published in 1991 I read it for the first time just a few weeks ago.  I’m not sure what took me so long to visit Castle Leoch and the MacKenzie Clan. I enjoyed the pace of the story and the intense and tender relationship between Claire Randall and Jamie McTavish especially watching how her assimilation unfolds as she adapts in order to survive in the Highlands.  The notion of time travel is so appealing with the opportunity to take a momentary absence from our current life and be deposited into another time period to explore. If I were to do that would I change history? Would the world be everything that I’d dreamt about and read?  Most importantly if I could get back to the present, would it be the same as it was before I departed?

For Claire she embraces those thoughts and then some as she struggles to stay alive in the first half of the book.  I have hope from the beginning that she will find her way back to her loving husband Frank in current day Scotland (1945) without becoming too invested in the world she’s now in. The cast of characters spreads the gamut from healers to the suspected witches and of course sexy Scotsman.   Halfway through the book I’ve embraced the notion that she might actually stay in 1743 as I find myself as well as Claire becoming more attached to Jamie. While Claire is conflicted we are left in constant wonder because the one thing that’s kept her going forward is her drive to return to Craigh na Dun, the free standing stones.  If she can actually make it amidst the obstacles along the way will she leave the past? Perhaps she will see how much she has to gain by staying here and everything to lose by going back to the future.

Once we are transported to 1743 we are thrust into the strife and struggles between the Clansman of Scotland as we are shown how rustic and at times barbaric their world is. One where verbal contracts and handshakes are binding law and women’s lib does not exist yet. For a confident and spirited woman Claire discovers her place in society and how her ability to be quick tongued may not be an asset in 1743. However, her knowledge of modern Nursing provides safety for her in helping the wounded as it makes her invaluable and helps her assimilate and survive.  I look forward to traveling to Scotland every Saturday for an hour to see how it unfolds through Claire’s journey.

Regardless of the story the networks present to us the casting is perfection and the backdrop of Scotland is breathtaking.  I have a feeling time travel will be in vogue and kilts will soon appear in many men’s closets! What color is your family Tartan? Mine’s reddish brown and green with white and yellow stripes.
